We at Brave New Foundation work to build and advance progressive ideals in America. We seek to inspire people to rise to the challenges we face by showcasing the stories of those who did so in generations before. We provide amplification for voices who call out for liberty and equality. We raise issues that deserve debate in the public sphere.
The long march toward a more perfect union advances through steps of inclusion. Through the mud of slavery, we took a mighty step to emancipation. Over hills of chauvinism we climbed to empowerment. Past barricades of bigotry we seized equality. Another major step has been taken as America picks a president not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. Like 1863, 1920, and 1964, 2008 will go down as a proud year in American history -- a proud year with an asterisk.
Within the elation felt around the world as the results of the election became clear, there was a sucker-punch to the gay community and the solid majority of Americans who support it. Despite arguments which avoid the fact, by its own language, California Proposition 8 Eliminates the Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry. In our proudest moments, we grant people rights. What kind of moment is it when we take them away? In a nation that is founded on the idea that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are inalienable human rights, how can we return to segregation and deny some of our countrymen their happiness?
We support the basic right of all people to love and to marry whomever they choose to be recognized by the State of California. We urge our fellow Californians to stand up and make this goal a reality. Join the impact by protesting tomorrow. Click here to find out where you need to be. This is our time to stand up for civil rights -- we’ll see you there.
