A year ago Senator Ted Stevens was one of the deciding votes for the DREAM Act, legislation that would alleviate the suffering of undocumented immigrant youth who had committed no crimes and had at least a 2-year post-secondary education. Stevens voted against the bill, dashing the hopes of over a million undocumented youth in America.
Call it karma or just coincidence, but the 84-year old Ted Stevens--the longest serving Republican in the Senate--was found guilty of seven felony counts earlier in the Week.
Senator Stevens refuses to back down despite calls from both Barack Obama and John McCain. He still considers himself above the law, gets to keep his pension and vote for himself, and will become the first convicted felon to serve in the Senate if re-elected. After all, a convicted felon can serve in the Senate. But if you are brought to this country illegally at the age of 2, you can't even go to college in some cases despite the fact that you have committed no crime and have outstanding academic records. Sounds fair to me.
Unlike Stevens, we are forgiving of his age nevermind that he is a 'convicted felon' and not just a minor who is being held responsible for the alleged transgressions of his parents. I doubt this experience would be an epiphany for him; he will probably receive a Presidential pardon and go back to being gung-ho about punishing kids and young adults who have committed no crime.
