JOHN MCCAIN: "There is a dramatic shift in the attitude of the Iraqi people and I'm telling you now that if we'd've done six months ago what the Democrats are trying to do, still trying to do now, we'd be out of there, there'd be al-Qaeda in charge and al-Qaeda would be telling the world that we beat the Americans. My friends, we have succeeded, and we have a long way to go. And we probably have more sacrifice. And I'm sorry. I'm sorry that we do. But I can tell you that if we'd've left six months ago, the way that the Democrats were trying to do, by cutting off the funding and setting a date for surrender, a date for withdrawal, we'd've been back . . . it would've become a base for al-Qaeda . . . "
