QUESTIONER: ". . . I know you've taken a stance on illegal immigration and one of the most important things we need to discuss here as a presidential candidate is the most im—this war on terror was started by an illegal immigrant . . . what are you doing, as a senator first, to stop illegal immigration?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "I'm working as hard as I can to carry out the mandate of the American people . . . secure the borders first. We've must secure the borders [applause] . . . I know how to secure the borders - with walls, with UAVs, with sensors, with vehicle barrier, with cameras and I will secure the borders first. Then, then we will move to a temporary worker program which is truly temporary with bio-metric, tamper-proof documents, truly temporary with [audience interrupts with boos] and so that anyone who doesn't have a temporary worker who's here legally then an employer would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. [applause] . . . there's two million people [sic], according to Chertoff who've broken our laws in this country - they must be deported as quickly as possible. That has to be our first step . . . that leaves, let's say, 10 million roughly. We don't know exactly. It seems to me that various things have to happen depending on how long they've been here, what their record has been [audience interrupts in disapproving commotion, McCain attempts to calm them] . . . I'm not gonna call up a soldier that's fighting in Iraq today and tell him I'm gonna deport his mother. I'm not gonna do that. You can do it. [applause]"
