John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Ypsilanti, MI 01/15/08
TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . in the first hundred days, assuming you become president, a lot of us who travel and those of us who stay here and look abroad feel that we've taken a beating internationally in terms of our reputation . . . I'm wondering . . . what would you do with the appointment process and what you do nationally, you know, to assure leaders of your cooperation and commitment in working with foreign leaders?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "I would recruit the best and the brightest in America. Those that share our principles, our values and our goals . . . I try to tell people the truth. Sometimes I say things you don't wanna hear and some things you wanna hear. I would declare that we will never torture another person in American custody. [applause] I would declare that we would close Guantanamo Bay and move those inmates to Ft. Levinworth in Kansas [applause]. I would declare that we will do everything in our power to have a global agreement on climate change that has to include India and China. [applause] It's no good without 'em . . . I might go to Canada and thank them . . . I might want to go to Mexico and meet with the president and say look, we've got to secure these borders [applause] . . . then I would travel around the world . . . what I also I think . . . tell our enemies that they've got something fear, the wrath of the United States of America [applause] . . . "
