Seems like O’Reilly can’t pick a topic to assail before he’s quickly and easily called out as a hypocrite, liar, or lunatic. His recent jihad against the film Redacted might hit the trifecta.
As some of you know, BOR has been screeching and peeing himself about Redacted (directed by Brian De Palma, produced by Mark Cuban), which tells a fictionalized version of the Al-Mahmudiyah massacre where a group of American soldiers raped a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and killed members of her family.
As expected, BOR dredged up the republican “endangering the soldiers/hurting America” clichés . See, US soldiers actually raping and murdering a young girl and killing her family is fine, but news reports and a movie’s adaptation of it endangers soldiers. Just like US soldiers and contractors (with the approval and encouragement of the Bush administration) actually torturing and unlawfully imprisoning Iraqis is fine, but movies and news reports talking about it endanger soldiers. Just like Murtha saying the US soldiers responsible for Haditha killed civilians in cold blood (which they did) apparently means that Murtha must be saying that all US soldiers kill civilians in cold blood. You’d have to be an idiot to believe this stuff, which is why BOR says it to his viewers. He thinks they’re idiots. Sadly, BOR went on:
There is no excuse for “Redacted.” The incident is based on a true story, but those who committed the crimes are in prison for life. You don’t celebrate this kind of aberration with a movie — you don’t brand the U.S. military with this stigma.Cuban and Redacted definitely benefited from all the attention and free press BOR provided the movie, but Cuban wanted to take it further. So he bought ad time for Redacted specifically during the Factor. And the ad aired. Twice. This is what Cuban said about it on his blog:
Charles Manson is an American too, but does he represent this country in any way? Of course not. And I believe even the odious Manson would not make a movie like “Redacted.”
I had someone call FoxNews and tell them specifically, unequivocally that we wanted to run an ad for the movie Redacted. The same movie Bill O’Reilly was so upset about.
They said no problem. Do you want to run the ads in both the live show and the repeat?
Our first reaction was that this was just the sales department and at some point, someone at FoxNews would step in and stop the ads from running. The call to say they were stopping the ads never came.
The ad ran in both shows. Here is a link with Bill's smiling face at the end.
So Mr. O’Reilly, the king of the O’Reilly Factor, the man who called this movie Anti American and said erroneously it could cause harm to American Troops, was willing to overlook those points and take our money to promote the movie.
Of course Mr. O’Reilly can make the argument that he is not involved in the sale of ads, he leaves that to other people. OK, but let’s think about the scenario at Fox News if that is the case.
If Mr. O’Reilly doesn’t know about the ads, I would think that the people at his show would know and care about his positions, wouldn’t you? So the question is, do they know that Mr. O’Reilly is all about the money first, last and every bit in between and that’s why they took the ad?
Or is it that they know exactly what Mr. O’Reilly stands for and hate him for it, or could care less what he thinks and they took the ad to spite him?
Is it that no one involved with Mr. O’Reilly actually watches the show? Which is why after the ad ran in the live show, no one caught it and had it replaced in the replay?
It’s about responsibility Mr. O’Reilly.
Cuban goes on to talk about all the murder and terrorism threats O’Reilly fans have made to Cuban’s businesses, as well as how they jammed the lines of Cuban’s charity, the Fallen Patriot Fund, which "donates money to help families of US military personnel who were killed or seriously injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom.” This, of course, is what’s bound to happen when O’Reilly knows he can convince his viewers that Cuban is responsible for the deaths of American soldiers. Think BOR will denounce this behavior by his fans? Of course not. Because he supports it. While he craps himself if someone shouts at Alberto Gonzales or Donald Rumsfeld, terrorist threats made on his behalf by his fans are awesome. That’s what kind of person he is.
Hypocrite? Check. Liar? Check.
I was going to go into a longer explanation of how insane BOR’s ideas are of what kinds of entertainment should be produced in this country, but I’ll save it for another time. But to complete the trifecta, BOR said that Charles Manson would have the moral courage and clarity to resist making a movie like Redacted that depicts a group of US soldiers unfavorably. Charles Manson. Who is clinically insane and started a cult responsible for the grisly murders of several people. Who carved a swastika into his head. A man who was responsible for the actual deaths of people would not make a movie that is a fictional account of a group of soldiers who actually killed people. Because Charles Manson is patriotic. More patriotic than Cuban, who has donated millions of dollars to the families of military personnel and has never murdered anyone. Because Cuban produced a movie.
Crazier than a shithouse rat? Trifecta complete.
